What is a Bike Fit?

Bike fitting is a specialized appointment aimed at enhancing a cyclist's positioning on their bike. Everything from the pedals, the saddle and the handlebars can be modified to optimize performance, comfort or help prevent injuries. This appointment requires every cyclist to bring their bike, shoes and all the clothes they typically wear to ride.

What to Expect From a Bike Fit?

Each session begins with an assessment of your condition, including a review of your past medical history and a discussion about your cycling background. Your bike will then be mounted on a trainer, where we will start evaluating your position and addressing any discomforts. Your therapist will adjust key elements in your shoes, saddle, and handlebars as necessary. It's important to wear your cycling clothes during the session, as you will be required to bike for a few minutes at a time. By the end of the appointment, you will receive a detailed chart outlining key measurements from your previous and new bike fit.

Is Bike Fitting covered by insurance?

The short answer is yes. If your insurance covers physiotherapy then you are covered at the same percentage as regular appointments. All bike fits are done by a licensed physiotherapist having completed a BikePT training. Lucky for you, if you have more other aches and pains, your physiotherapist can help you for those as well. Being experts in biomechanics, sports rehabilitation and injury management, your physio is perfectly placed to help you manage and rehab any injuries that may arise over your shorter or longer rides.

Endura is an independant physiotherapy clinic located in the West-Island of Montreal. We are on a mission to better our community with elevated care and an active approach to our rehabilitation services. Begin your journey today.

Frequently asked questions

What is a bike fitting performed by a physiotherapist?

A bike fitting carried out by a physiotherapist goes beyond a simple saddle adjustment. We analyse your posture on the bike, your movement angles, your areas of discomfort and your goals in order to customize your position in a way that protects your joints and improves your pedalling efficiency. It is a clinical approach grounded in biomechanics.

Who should get a bike fitting?

Any cyclist who experiences pain (knees, lower back, neck, hands) during or after riding should have one. It is also recommended for cyclists who are increasing their training volume, who have just purchased a new bike, or who want to optimize their performance and comfort over long distances.

Can poor bike positioning cause injuries?

Yes, very frequently. A saddle that is too high or too low, a poorly positioned handlebar, or incorrect cleat alignment can cause knee pain, tendinitis, lower back pain or numbness. Many cycling injuries stem from an accumulation of mechanical strain caused by inadequate positioning.

What is the difference between a bike fitting at a physio clinic and one at a regular bike shop?

A bike shop adjusts your position based on standard measurements and the salesperson's experience. A physiotherapist analyses your biomechanics, your mobility limitations, your injury history and your goals to personalise the position specifically for your body. If you have pain or injuries, the clinical approach is far more appropriate.

Do I need to bring my bike to the clinic for the fitting?

Yes. The fitting is done on your own bike, because it is your position on your equipment that we want to optimise. Please also bring your usual gear (cycling shoes, shorts, cleats if applicable) so that the assessment is as representative as possible of your actual riding conditions.
